A part of me needed the beach. There is something about the feeling of that gentle gulf breeze against my skin, the sound of the ocean waves and seagulls to my ears, the smell of the sea water to my nostrils. There is something about the beach that brings me serenity. And I was long overdue for a visit. In those gentle moments, I snap a few pictures, then put away technology to live in the moment. The trip is often rounded out with some good seafood, with gator bites included and that generally is enough to hold me over until the next time that part of me whispers gently, "Can we go to the beach?" Imagine my, shall I say nonsurprise, when I get back to reality to learn that the United States has bombed key nuclear sites in Iran. I say nonsurprise because though you hope for different, deep down I knew this was coming. What does this now mean for us? For the world?
In times of global unrest, like rising tensions between nations, many of us carry a heavy undercurrent of anxiety. Even if we’re going about our daily routines of answering emails, making dinner, checking in on loved ones, there can be a sense that something’s... off. That low hum of fear, a tightness in the chest, or a racing mind that won’t turn off at night.
If yesterdays news has you feeling like this now or in the days to come, I want you to know: you're not alone, and there is nothing wrong with you. In fact, your anxiety might be doing exactly what it was designed to do, try to keep you safe.
Why Am I So Anxious Right Now?

That’s where Internal Family Systems (IFS) offers such a powerful lens. IFS teaches us that we’re not one singular personality, but rather, a system of many “parts” or inner voices and patterns that each have a story, a role, and a reason for showing up .From an IFS perspective, anxiety is often the voice of a “protector” part. These parts step in to shield us from potential harm. They're not trying to ruin our day. They're trying to help, even though sometimes in ways that overwhelm us.
You might recognize some of these familiar inner players:
The Worrier: constantly scanning for danger, trapped in “what if” spirals.
The Inner Critic: scolding you for feeling anxious at all.
The Controller: trying to micromanage everything in an attempt to feel secure.
The Distractor: leading you to binge on news, food, or social media to escape the fear.
These parts often carry the burdens of old pain, past trauma, or inherited fears. They do their best to keep things together but of course, they need help. More specifically, they need the steady, compassionate presence of your Self, the calm, clear, connected essence at your core.
You Don’t Have to Push Anxiety Away to Find Peace

What if, instead of bracing for battle against those churning, unsettling feelings we label as anxiety, or feeling utterly dictated by their insistent demands, you could choose a different path? Imagine, for a moment, extending a hand of genuine kindness and a spirit of open curiosity towards these very parts of yourself that feel so overwhelming. What if the relentless worry that keeps you up at night, the nagging doubts that cloud your day, weren’t fundamental flaws in your being, but rather intricate clues, carefully crafted signals trying to get your attention?

Consider the possibility that this anxiety, in
its many forms, is not a saboteur, but a messenger. Perhaps it's a message whispered, or sometimes shouted, from an inner protector, a part of you deeply invested in your well-being, even if its methods feel misguided or intense. This protector might be carrying burdens from the past, anticipating future threats, or simply trying its best to navigate a world that often feels unpredictable. What if, instead of pushing it away or silencing it, you leaned in, with gentle inquiry, to understand what it’s truly trying to communicate? What needs, what fears, what experiences lie beneath the surface of this anxious expression?
You don’t have to navigate this alone. I work with individuals who are ready to explore their internal landscape with gentle curiosity, especially during emotionally charged times like these. Whether your anxiety is tied to world events, personal uncertainty, or both please know it makes sense. And you deserve a space where your emotions aren’t minimized but met with compassion and respect.
