5 Obstacles Preventing You Reaching Your Full Potential

We are all born unique. In fact, this uniqueness is encoded genetically into our DNA. Each one of us is a one-time phenomenon that has never occurred before and will never be repeated again. The seed of our uniqueness is planted at birth. That seed grows and transforms itself as we reach our fullest potential. Our life's task is to fulfill our destiny often times through our work. Each song writer, each musician, each author, each artist, each theologian, each government official, each teacher, each lawyer, each architect, each doctor, each nurse, each of us has something unique to offer the world through our work. We just have to get on the path to our greatness. But why do some of us seem to hit a wall and grow stagnant, not quite reaching our potential and discovering our uniqueness?

Pressure to Meet Others' Expectations

It takes a strong sense of self to fulfill our life's task and fulfill our destiny. A strong sense of self. However, our identity development does not occur in a vacuum. Our parents, our siblings, our cousins, our aunts/uncles, our pastors, our community if you get where I'm going with this, all factor into our development of self-identity. Because of our innately human desire for community, we contend with the very powerful urge to fit into a group. Unconsciously, we may feel that what makes us, well us, is too different, too embarrassing, too painful. So, we water ourselves down to fit in. This urge to fit in can become so strong, that we lose complete contact with our uniqueness. We lose contact with who we really are. When this happen, we find that we stop dreaming big and start conforming to what is safe according to everyone else around us. An example of this could be careers we choose. I don't know about you, but I cannot count the number of times various family members encouraged me to go to school, and get a good job, with benefits. How many of us take such admonition to heart and end up choosing careers that don't really suit us, but pays the bills?

Your Comfort Zone

Staying within our comfort zones is a common obstacle that can significantly limit our personal growth and potential. Our comfort zone represents a psychological state in which we personally feel safe, familiar, and in control. It's the space where we experience low anxiety and stress because we're doing things we're used to and have mastered. While the comfort zone can provide a sense of security, it also holds us back in many ways. When we are constantly floating in the shallow end of the pool, we never really learn to swim. We never challenge ourselves thus never learn nor push ourselves past our current limits. When we do this, we also do not develop our resiliency which is a necessary skill to manage life's stressors. Last but definitely not least, staying within our comfort zone prevents us from truly learning ourselves and developing our self-identity. We may have talents yet untapped that remain hidden from us because we are unwilling to take a leap outside of our zone of comfort.

Self-Care Slacking

Neglecting physical health and mental health can have a significant impact on your personal growth, limiting your overall capabilities and achievements. When we maintain our physical health through appropriate sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, we increase the likelihood of our having more energy and resilience to pursue our goals and remain focused. When we maintain our mental health we improve our memory, problem solving skills, and decision making skills. When we don't, we are more likely to experience brain fog, reduced concentration, and difficulty in processing information, all of which can hinder our progress. Prioritizing our self-care is not just about feeling good in the present; it's about creating the optimal conditions for long-term success and personal growth. By taking care of our bodies and minds, we can unleash our full potential.

Lack of Focus and Distractions

The good thing is we have technological advances that previous societies could only have dreamed of. The bad thing is, these technological advances often increase the challenge of us maintaining our focus. TVs. Computers. Phones. Constant notifications, social media, and a never-ending stream of information can divert our attention from our goals and hinder our ability to concentrate on what truly matters. By setting clear goals, eliminating distractions, practicing mindfulness, and structuring our time effectively, we can make more meaningful progress and seize opportunities that will help us reach our fullest potential.

Money, Money, Money

Our list could not be complete without addressing the elephant in the room.

There are those of us who are able to stand up and disregard expectations of others that do not align with our life task. There are those of us who have an adventurous spirit, constantly testing and retesting the bounds of our comfort level. There are those of us who make it a point to stay on top of self-care (physical and mental). Then there are also those of us who have the discipline and motivation to focus. Yet what we don't have is money. Financial constraints are a common obstacle that can impede our journey toward reaching our full potential. The lack of financial resources can be a significant barrier, especially in pursuits that require investments such as education or starting a business. This one can be a tricky one to address and there isn't necessarily a one-size fits all approach. A good starting place, however, could be to create a financial plan. What are our estimated costs? Next, we need to have a budget so we can see just exactly where our funds are going. Lastly, we need to demonstrate our resourcefulness by tapping into our creativity and seeking support. With strategic financial planning, resourcefulness, and a determined mindset, we can navigate these constraints and make meaningful progress towards realizing our full potential.
