We all deal with stress. Whether it’s at work, at home, or just trying to get through traffic. Sometimes it really piles on, like after a tough conversation or when everything feels like too much. That kind of stress can wear you down and mess with how you think, feel, and function. The truth is, no one’s life is totally stress-free. But the good news? You can learn to manage it. Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, there’s no better time to check in with yourself and explore simple ways to protect your peace. Try these easy techniques to start feeling more grounded and in control.

Positive Self-Talk

Can we have a truth moment? We all talk to ourselves. Yes, I know, embarrassing to think about but we both know it is true. Sometimes it’s out loud, but most of the time, it happens quietly in our heads. This inner dialogue, or self-talk, can go two ways: it might lift you up with thoughts like, “I’ve got this” or “It’ll all work out,” or it might tear you down with things like, “I’m such a failure” or “I’ll never get this right.” When that self-talk turns negative, it can actually make your stress worse. But the good news is, positive self-talk can do the opposite—it helps you stay calm and handle stress better. And with a little practice, you can learn to catch those negative thoughts and flip them into something more supportive. Here’s a few examples:

I can't do this.

I'll do the best I can. I've got this.

Everything is going wrong.

I can handle this if I take one step at a time.

I hate it when this happens.

I know how to deal with this; I've done it before.

I feel helpless and alone.

I can reach out and get help if I need it.

I can't believe I screwed up.

I'm human, and we all make mistakes. I can fix it.

To really get the hang of it, try to practice positive self-talk every single day. Whether you're stuck in traffic, at your computer, or just about to drift off, make an effort whenever you notice those negative thoughts popping up. It's even a great thing to teach the little ones!

Top10 Emergency Stress-Stoppers

When stress hits out of nowhere, it helps to have a few "emergency stress stoppers" in your back pocket—quick, practical actions you can turn to for fast relief. Think of them like mental first aid: just as you’d use a bandage for a cut, these tools help calm your mind and body in the heat of the moment. Stress can show up in different ways depending on the situation—an abrupt conflict, an overwhelming task, or a sudden change—so it’s helpful to have a variety of strategies to choose from. Sometimes, using just one technique will do the trick; other times, layering a few together can have a stronger, calming effect. The key is finding what works for you. To get started, here are some quick and effective ideas to try the next time stress catches you off guard.

1. Count to Ten

Before reacting, take a pause and slowly count to ten. It gives your mind a moment to reset and can prevent you from saying or doing something you'll regret.

2. Breathe Deeply

Take a few slow, deep breaths—in through your nose, out through your mouth. With each breath, feel your muscles release tension. It’s amazing how something so simple can help you feel more at ease.

3. Take a Quick Walk

Even a short walk—to the restroom, the mailbox, or around the block—can break the tension and give you a moment to clear your head.

4. Try a Mini Meditation or Prayer

A minute or two of mindfulness, meditation, or prayer can shift your perspective and bring calm to a racing mind.

5. Sleep on It

If it’s not urgent, give yourself time to reflect before responding—especially with stressful emails or social media comments. Things often feel clearer in the morning.

6. Step Away for a While

If possible, walk away from the stressful situation and come back to it later when you’re calmer and thinking more clearly.

7. Break It Down

Big problems can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller tasks and focus on one step at a time. Progress, not perfection, is what matters.

8. Play Soothing Sounds

Turn on some calming music or listen to an uplifting podcast. This is especially helpful during commutes or while dealing with frustrating situations.

9. Connect with Comfort

Pet your dog or cat, hug someone you love, or do something kind for someone else. Connection helps release feel-good hormones that combat stress.

10. Move Your Body

Physical activity is a powerful stress reliever. Whether it's a workout, stretching, or dancing around your living room, moving helps shake off tension.

Stress Busting Activities

Stress has a way of draining our energy and clouding our thoughts. Engaging in activities you enjoy is one of the most natural and effective ways to relieve stress and find your happy place. When life feels overwhelming, taking time for things that bring you joy can be a powerful antidote to tension. Even if you're feeling down, simple things like going for a walk in nature, catching up with a friend, or diving into a good book can help shift your mood. It’s all about giving yourself permission to step away from stress, even if only for a little while. These small moments of joy are essential for maintaining balance in the midst of a busy or challenging day. And remember, it’s okay to take that time for yourself—sometimes a short pause is exactly what you need to come back feeling refreshed and more capable of tackling what’s next. If you’re looking for ideas to start with, here are a few activities that might work for you:

1. Get Creative

Tap into your creative side by drawing, coloring, painting, or playing a musical instrument. Making art is not only fun, but it can also be a great way to release stress and express your emotions in a healthy way.

2. Reflect on Good Memories

Take a break from the chaos and work on a scrapbook or photo album. Focusing on happy memories can bring a sense of calm and remind you of the positive moments in life.

3. Escape into a Book

Sometimes, a good book, short story, or even a magazine can help you take your mind off stress. Whether it’s fiction or a non-fiction read, let yourself get lost in a story for a little while.

4. Catch Up with a Friend

Sometimes the best way to feel better is to connect with others. Meet a friend for a coffee (or my personal favorite, herbal tea) and chat about life. Sharing laughs and good conversation can help lift your spirits.

5. Get Moving with Your Favorite Sport

Engage in a sport you love, whether it's golf, tennis, or a good old-fashioned game of basketball. Physical activity is not only great for your health but can also help release pent-up stress.

6. Dive Into a Craft

If you enjoy hands-on activities, try a hobby like sewing, knitting, or making jewelry. These creative outlets can be both relaxing and fulfilling, providing a perfect distraction from stress.

7. Play with Your Kids or Pets

Spending time outdoors with your children or pets can help you connect with the present moment and take your mind off worries. A simple walk or playtime can bring a sense of joy and calm.

8. Listen to Music or Watch an Uplifting Performance

Music has the power to change your mood instantly. Put on your favorite playlist or watch an inspiring performance to give yourself a boost of positivity.

9. Take a Walk in Nature

Step outside for a peaceful walk in nature. Whether it’s in the park, the woods, or just around the neighborhood, the fresh air and natural surroundings can help reset your mind.

10. Indulge in a Relaxing Bath

Treat yourself to a long, relaxing bath. Let the warm water wash away the stress of the day and take a moment to unwind.

11. Meditate or Practice Yoga

Meditation and yoga are both great practices for stress relief. Even just a few minutes of mindful breathing or stretching can help ground you and release tension from your body.

12. Work in the Garden or Tackle a Home Project

If you enjoy working with your hands, try gardening or taking on a small home improvement project. Focusing on something productive and physical can help clear your mind and give you a sense of accomplishment.

13. Go for a Run or Bike Ride

Sometimes the best way to release stress is through physical activity. A quick run or bike ride can help clear your head, boost your mood, and keep you energized.
