But just what exactly do I mean when I say self-care?

In society today, we focus a lot on relationships with other people and how to communicate and nurture those bonds. We're just now getting to a point where we are, not shifting the focus, but rather adding to the conversation the importance of the relationship we have with ourselves. Let's face it. The relationship you have with yourself is not unlike any other relationship in your life. There is still an expectation of ongoing exploration, listening, responding, and growth. The practice of self-care requires that you give active attention to the relationship you have with yourself and that you create time and space in your daily life to nurture your connection. Self-care is more than just hot vacation destinations, luxurious spa days, and pampering treats; it extends far beyond the confines of a relaxation session.

Just as your interests and challenges at say fifteen or twenty may not be the same ones you have at forty. So too, will your self-care practices and rituals evolve and change. What served as self-care one day may not be another. We need different things at different times. A good recipe to follow is to choose a practice that you can reasonably undertake, that brings you energy and renewal, and connects with your unique identity.
