The idea for this article began brewing over the last couple of weeks. The night sky. I had ended a workday and needed to go on a quick store run to pick up a few items for my rescue kittens. I grabbed my partner in crime, my mother, and we journeyed to the wilderness that is Walmart. It was a cool, crisp night (maybe not to anyone else but anything below 72°F is cool to me). Yet in my country rural Alabama town, the night sky this time of year is captivating. That twinkle, twinkle nursery rhyme takes on added meaning on a clear night sky here. Because on a clear night, those stars truly do look like diamonds sparkling against a beautiful velvety black canvas. It is breath taking stuff. Sadly, for me, such a sky as that is only achieved here in the fall and winter months (my two least favorite times of the year). However, I know for many other of my blog supporters, fall is among their favorite times of the year whether it be for the cooler temps ushering in pumpkin spice and scarves, the sporting events, or the colorful leaves. So, it got me to thinking, this year we have been delving into the richness of mindfulness. Fall's crisp air and shorter days beckon us to slow down, reflect, and ground ourselves in the present moment. This article will explore how mindfulness can guide you towards a more peaceful, centered, and grounded autumn season. Here are 3 activities for you to try on to help you fall into mindfulness.
A Night Sky's Magic
There truly was something extra special about witnessing the Northern Lights this far south in the hemisphere not once but twice this year. This here is my shot from October 10, 2024. But on any given clear night here in my sleepy rural town, you can look up at the sky and really see nature trying to outdo the spectacular diamond studded show from the night before. The vast expanse of twinkling lights above, each a distant sun, fills one with a sense of wonder and insignificance. The universe, with its infinite expanse and mysterious depths, invites contemplation and introspection. As we lose ourselves in the celestial spectacle, a profound sense of peace and tranquility washes over us, reminding us of our place in the grand cosmic order. This mindful moment to pause and reflect with nature is number one on my list of activities to help us fall into mindfulness.
Bonfire Bliss
Some of my fondest memories involving Alabama football was when friends and I would get together for an Iron Bowl bonfire. Thinking back to those moments now, I realize that there was such a sense of ease that was felt. The sound of the fire crackling. The scent of the smoke. The warmth radiating from the flames. The sight of the flames dancing and twirling, all while shifting colors of various gradients of red and orange. I did not realize it then, but watching, listening to, and experiencing a bonfire offers a unique mindfulness strategy because it engages multiple senses as once. You can literally get lost in the moment.
Finding Peace in Autumn's Hues
Green. Yellow. Orange. Red. Brown. Nature's paintbrush goes out of her way to charm us when it comes to the breath-taking sight that is fall leaves. As the world quiets down, the changing leaves provide an ideal backdrop for deepening mindfulness practices. Beyond the striking colors, pay attention to the gentle flutter of leaves as they descend to the ground. Feel the cool autumn breeze on your skin and inhale the earthy scent of the fallen foliage. Immerse yourself in the moment, and let nature’s beauty soothe your mind and soul.
As the season changes, fall offers a unique opportunity to deepen your mindfulness practice and stay grounded in the present moment. By embracing the beauty of the season and incorporating mindful practices into your daily life, you can maintain a sense of balance, peace, and well-being as you navigate this time of transition. While formal meditation practices are helpful, mindfulness can also be found in everyday life. In fact, the more personal a mindfulness exercise, the more powerful it can be. So take a deep breath, step outside, and let the season guide you into a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you. Did you enjoy this post? We would love to hear from you.
